A Vital Architectural History Book
A wide range of architectural styles are represented in Savannah. Both public buildings and private homes provide sterling examples of our architectural heritage.
"A viable historic city is the best gift a community can give to itself and civilization."

First Victory
Successful efforts to save the Davenport House by the Historic Savannah Foundation in the mid-1950s marked the first real victory in Savannah's struggle to save its historic architecture. From 1933 to 1956, 13 of the 56 major historic landmarks listed by the Historic American Buildings Survey had been demolished.
Unfinished Success
Much work still remains. Although many of the city's historic structures have been preserved, many properties still await the care necessary for survival. This is particularly true in the Victorian districts south of the original city.
Unique Harmony
Today, Savannah's architecture blends harmoniously with the city's plan and lush vegetation to create a unique harmonious relationship between man and nature even within a densely urban environment. The city's residential architecture spans a spectrum from utilitarian to ornate.
Spanning Centuries
Savannah's architecture reflects the trends of the times in an accessible scale.
