Two types
of ironwork are found in the city: wrought
(worked) iron and cast iron. Wrought iron
is forged and beaten into shape - cast iron
is melted and poured into molds. Manufacture
of wrought iron pieces is more labor intensive
but it is stronger and more durable than the
rather brittle cast or "grey" iron.
Both kinds of work are found throughout Savannah.
Cast iron work, at left, may be made of many
identical pieces, each cast separately and
repeated. Wrought iron is made of hammered
bar or sheet stock as illustrated by the stair
railing at right.
